Bill on Boynton

Bill Haisten had three short paragraphs that summarize perfectly the realities of Mike Boynton’s tenure at Oklahoma State – and what will define it.

Boynton seems to understand that every time he leaves the house, he is marketing the Cowboy basketball program. He seems cool with it and does a good job with it. He’s a New York guy with an Oklahoma touch on human relations.

The weaponry issue can be resolved only through recruiting. Whether Boynton becomes defined as an important, winning coach depends on his ability to recruit.

Patience is required from the OSU fan base, just like it is a necessity within an Illinois fan base that probably didn’t expect an 0-6 Big Ten stumble from Underwood. [TulsaWorld]

If Coach Boynton continues to embrace (and build) the culture, finds some Big 12-grade offensive weaponry and the fans are patient – who knows where this thing winds up. Likely better than most would have anticipated.

No Pressure

For those interested in who Mike Gundy will hire as his new defensive lieutenant, reportedly he’s not in a big hurry.

Still, Gundy says he won’t rush to find his next defensive coordinator. Gundy hasn’t spoken to the media since the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28, but he told OSU radio sideline reporter Robert Allen of GoPokes.com last week that he isn’t letting the recruiting timetable pressure him into making a quick hire.

Sources have said Gundy would like to nudge the defense toward more heavy use of a three-man front, which could take some options off the table. [NewsOK]

One might assume that coaches don’t make a decision without the perfect candidate in mind… but when was the last time Mike Gundy was predictable off the field?
