Daily Bullets (August 25) – Why Pick Texas over OSU?, Corndog Inherits a Mercedes
Logic (?) Behind Longhorns over Cowboys
TulsaWorld’s Guerin Emig takes a look at why (in the world) pundits have Texas over OSU in preseason polls.
My guess is it’s the quarterback. Texas has two QBs that pollsters are at least familiar with – Sam Ehlinger and Shane Buechele. I’m not sure either is very good, but at least you are aware of them.
Taylor Cornelius is a completely unknown commodity after watching Mason Rudolph the past four years. We don’t know what Gundy has in the guy, and if we don’t how can we expect AP voters from the Marietta (Georgia) Daily Journal or the Journal Inquirer from Manchester, Connecticut, to have a clue?
All these folks know is it takes a ton of points to win games in the Big 12 Conference, Rudolph and James Washington just graduated to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and now who’s gonna account for those 80-yard touchdown bombs? I get the skepticism.
What I don’t understand is giving Texas the benefit of any doubt. Not after what’s happened in Austin over the past decade. And certainly not after what’s happened in the OSU-Texas series over that same period. [TulsaWorld]
Emig nailed it on the head with the quarterback questions – would you rather bet on a team with two fairly inconsistent quarterbacks (one who lost to Tech) or a program who’s made its hay reloading and remaining in the upper tier of the league?
Just Fire The Loaded Gun
Taylor Cornelius is well aware that he’s taking over a humming machine in the Cowboy offense that’s loaded with all the bells and whistles.
Taylor Cornelius admits that he comes into this season as a man that is lucky to have all the riches he inherits on offense.
“Absolutely, I’ve got a guy like Justice Hill at running back that is an All-American and just an unbelievable talent and then other guys that in my eyes are so underrated and then wide receivers that I know are going to make a lot of big plays this year,” affirmed Cornelius. “I have Tyron Johnson and Tylan Wallace. Then there is Dillon Stoner and Jalen McCleskey. I have four go-to targets, really more than that because of Landon Wolf and Tracin Wallace and other guys. I have a great situation. [GoPokes]
OSU and NCAA Notes
Cowboy receiver Pat McKaufman is out for the year :(….McMurphy’s comments on Urban Meyer here are fascinating – not reporting but predicting no Meyer on the sidelines this fall….Loved this piece on building a college football version of the Golden State Warriors…Stewart Mandel has the Pokes in the Cheeze-It bowl ($) against San Diego State
This was fascinating to me. Dual-threat quarterbacks (see 2015 J.W. Walsh) can be so valuable to an offense but the Cowboy offense hums when you can get the ball downfield and to your outside receivers.
Gundy on Cornelius: “He can throw ‘em all. I’m not nervous about him at all.”
Says he’s nervous about Kenzie needing to go to the bathroom, though. #okstate

The late Gundy kick here is fantastic. I’m terrible at comps but Gundy as a player reminds me of the QB from Friday Night Lights (the movie).

OSU has three backs on the roster who will run for 1,000 yards in a season before they graduate.
Since 2004, TCU has had 3 1000+ yard Rushers, while Oklahoma State has had 5 1400+ yard rushers. (9 1000+ yard rushers) Fun facts!

I’m not a Lakers fan but those jerseys are epic.

Richards as a 6’8″ guard is terrifying and may a low-key reason why a 6’6″ quarterback is ideal.
Gundy said ideally, #OKState will rotate Keyes, Williams and Richards at guard to keep all three as fresh as possible. First time in a while OSU has had that luxury.
