Daily Bullets (Sept 16) – A Long-Awaited Signature Home Win, Cornelius Klein, Lots of Week Three Talk

Scaling the Win

In reflecting on the magnitude of yesterday’s trajectory-shaping win, looking at how the game was being framed paints a picture.

The Boise State challenge is way beyond the typical nonconference home game. This one is an event and one of the better matchups nationally this weekend.

OSU fans should be every bit as nervous as they are excited. Boise State is the most potent opponent to visit Stillwater in nine years — since Georgia and Houston were in Stillwater for the first two games of the 2009 season.

Oklahoma State has to play well for two reasons.

First, Boise State has the best non-Power 5 squad in college football.

Second, there is an obligation consideration.

After what transpired last season — three home defeats, each occurring in games in which OSU entered as the favorite — coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys owe their fans a signature performance and victory. Maybe something that would resemble the 2013 Baylor outcome. [TulsaWorld]

Consider this “debt” repaid – it wasn’t necessarily shades of 2013 Baylor but Boise got a Justice Hill-stiff arm everytime they tried to cut it to a one-score game.

Getting the Ball Rolling

The standard to judge Taylor Cornelius by is what he did after the first quarter not Mason Rudolph and his flawless deep ball, Brandon Weeden’s fade route, or Zac Robinson’s zone read. It’s seeing that the offense is effective, efficient and putting points on the board. And for most of the game yesterday, he did just that.

Once free from a sluggish offensive start, the Cowboys dominated play; and to quote Gundy, in all three phases.

Taylor Cornelius made like some Collin Klein-Vinny Testaverde hybrid, all 6-foot-6, 232 pounds of him so deceivingly darting for important yards (and two TDs) in the run game, but also firing through the air. His confidence seemingly growing with the game clock, Corndog finished 15-of-26 for 243 yards and a score. Justice Hill went for 123 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries. [GoPokes]

Gundy Puts the “G” in Swagger

While most were surprised by the performance of yesterday, Mike Gundy (and this newscaster) don’t appear to have been.

Talk to those inside the program, and they’ll say Gundy has always shown a fun-loving side behind closed doors. And since he was known as a shoot-from-the-hip player and assistant, that’s not surprising.

But letting the whole world see it on a more regular basis is a change.

It says two things: Gundy is secure, and he’s all in on OSU.

OSU isn’t a flash in the pan. Since the start of the 2008 season, the Cowboys have won 98 games and had six double-digit-win seasons. They have staked a claim as the second-best program in the Big 12, a lofty spot that seemed nearly unattainable when Gundy took over.

“Just being a successful coach,” (Justin) Phillips said, “he’s able to be a little more free and joke around a little more.” [NewsOK]

You could presume the confidence comes from job security (and that could be true), but a huge part is knowing and seeing that your team is capable of an output like yesterday.
