Mike Gundy Had an Epic Response When Asked About Potentially Coaching His Son
This is Mike Gundy in peak offseason form.
Mike Gundy is the head coach at Oklahoma State (#breakingnews). Gunnar Gundy, his middle son, is a rising senior quarterback down the road at Stillwater High with Division I talent. It’s only natural that the elder Gundy would be asked about potentially coaching his son, especially with buzz that it could one day happen.
And he was! Last week at Big 12 media days, the topic was broached appropriately and interestingly with a question about how he would coach him. Here’s the full response to that question, which deserves to be mega-viral because it is so painfully on brand. From The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright:
“When asked how he would coach his son, Gunnar, if the situation arose: “I told him, if you come to Oklahoma State, I’ll coach you like I do everybody else… If you’re the best player, you’ll play. If not, you won’t play — even though I’m sleeping with your mom.” [NewsOK]
Take a bow, Mike. Take a big stinking bow.
This probably isn’t the best recruiting pitch — you’ll play or you won’t, but either way I’m still sleeping with your mom! — but it’s definitely the best on-brand response he could’ve given. And let’s face it: Gunnar’s probably heard the same spiel at home about what it would look like if he played at OSU.
Will it happen, though? Will Gunnar follow in his father’s footsteps and make a name for himself at OSU? By the looks of it, it would likely be as a walk-on. OSU has a commitment sealed in the 2020 class with 6-foot-6 Cali quarterback Shane Illingworth, and Gunnar to this point has two offers: one from Eastern Michigan, another from Toledo.
Insiders think unless he gets a monstrous offer, OSU is the likely destination for him. And if it is, expect plenty of more money quotes from his father — whether he rides the pine or runs the show.
