Daily Bullets (Sept. 29): Let the Chuba Hubbard Heisman Talk Begin

Published

Good morning. Chuba Hubbard is a game or two away from being in the Heisman conversation in a real way. Or maybe we’re already there (see below).

• Oh yeah, the defense was good, too

• Chuba as a Heisman candidate? Bill Haisten says it’s time to fire up the chatter …

After they share the Boone Pickens Stadium turf for the Nov. 30 Bedlam game, is it possible Chuba Hubbard and Jalen Hurts will be reunited Dec. 14 in New York, seated side by side during the Heisman Trophy ceremony? [Tulsa World]

I’m faint.

We’re at the point where if he doesn’t get to 2,000 yards, it would be more of a surprise than if he does. I don’t know what the numbers are in terms of players who have rushed for 2K and not gone to NYC, but it can’t be a lot. Sure, it’s still early, but after next week the season will be half over. And Chuba will be more than halfway to that magical 2K mark.

• Marshall Scott also wrote about Chuba for us on Saturday.

It’s only been five games, but Hubbard’s 187.6 yards a game would put him second in school history on OSU’s single-season list. That only trails Barry Sanders’ Heisman-winning season of 237.5 yards a game.

He’s also on track to become the second Cowboy to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season, again only behind Sanders’ 1988 year. If Hubbard kept this pace, he would run for about 2,439 yards in a 13-game season. Again, it’s way too early, but that number would be the fourth most in a season in NCAA history. [PFB]

The numbers — there are so many of them — are all astonishing. The numbers — there are so many of them — are all astonishing. Here’s a look at all the players currently over 500 rush yards this season. Chuba is nearly at 1,000.

And so is the buzz from people who matter.

Yes!

YES!

• Jenni Carlson wrote well about OSU’s defene, which despite nearly three hundy from No. 30, was probably the best story of Saturday night. I enjoyed the nuance and detail here.

So, how did the Cowboys work their defensive magic against the Wildcats?

For starters, Jim Knowles used some interesting alignments. In running situations, for example, OSU went heavy on the defensive line. The Cowboys would essentially play three down linemen who were all defensive tackles. With some combination of Brendon Evers, Cameron Murray, Israel Antwine and Samuela Tuihalamaka, they had guys who were at least 290 pounds across the line.

Then a defensive end like Brock Martin would lineup at linebacker or in a stand-up position along the line of scrimmage. OSU also used three linebackers more than it has in recent memory. Amen Ogbongbemiga, Malcolm Rodriguez and Devin Harper played a bunch of snaps together Saturday night.

So, the Cowboys had some interesting combinations and tweaked alignments that were part of the equation of domination. [NewsOK]

• Robert Allen wrote about the Daniyel Ngata visit. Nagata is the No. 2 all-purpose back in the country and is predicted to go to Texas A&M.

Jacobs was there in the hallway talking to Gundy, but Gundy and his staff are hosting Folsom, Calf. all-purpose back and Under Armour All-American Daniyel Ngata. He will be on his official visit all the way through early Monday morning after arriving early Saturday. Ngata was seen before the game in the stands and then again in the locker room with his father listening to Mike Gundy’s postgame speech and Mr. Ngata was nodding approvingly to what he was hearing.  [GoPokes]

Dudes only.

• Marshall Scott did a great job on this Jonathan Laurent piece.

Laurent has also developed quite the 3-point shot. He made 47 percent of his 75 3-point attempts last season. That percentage is higher than what Lindy Waters (45 percent) and Thomas Dziagwa (43 percent) shot last season. It wasn’t always like that for Laurent, though. In his freshman season at Rutgers, Laurent shot 25 3s and made only six of them. As a sophomore, he was 4-for-15.

“Man, I put in a lot of work,” Laurent said. “A lot of long nights in the gym. At Rutgers, I used to shoot a lot but never did it in a game because I didn’t have the confidence I would say. But the confidence really grew in the year after. I just kept putting in the work, and it paid off.” [PFB]

I have no idea how this OSU hoops season is going to go, but it’s pretty fun to think about what it could be. Maybe that’s the allure of Boynton. Maybe it never goes beyond that. But what if it does? I said in Slack on Saturday something like, I want OSU to be good at basketball so bad. The response: So does Boynton.

• Here are my 10 thoughts on the game.

• Wait, do what??

Good column here by Jenni Carlson about giving Gleeson the green light in the red zone. Will again be a hot-button topic this week.

Good stuff here from RA on Samuel Tuihalamaka, who (I believe) had a forced fumble against KSU on Saturday.

The Megabooster. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s EDSBS on Pickens so … yeah, it’s going to be good.

CTRL + P, /stores in notebook until Thanksgiving.

• Trillingsworth on hand on Saturday.

• Some pretty amazing photos out of the weather delay on Saturday.

• Really loved this.

• Bryce Thompson was inside of GIA on Saturday after (during) a Bedlam Twitter battle involving his (hopefully) future coach. Here is proof.
