Daily Bullets (Dec. 23): Mike Yurcich to Austin?
I’d love to see Chuba come out in a pair of these on Friday.
Bullets Rundown
• Yurcich the top candidate to call plays in Austin
• Mason Rudolph got another shot in Pittsburgh yesterday
• A receivers coach candidate
OSU Bullets
• Mike Yurcich is the leading candidate to be the next offensive coordinator in Austin.
Yurcich is making $950,000 this year at Ohio State, according to USA Today‘s database. That makes him the 31st-highest paid assistant in the country. Texas could definitely top that, as Orlando (the fired defensive coordinator) made $1.7 million this year, making him the sixth-highest paid assistant in the country. [PFB]
Beating $950k is a tough task but Texas apparently has deep enough pockets. My question is why would Yurcich take the job? It’s easy to recruit to Austin but he’s an Ohio boy near his family and he’s at very minimal risk of being fired – he’s not even calling plays.
Tom Herman could be on the outs in Austin at the end of next year if this doesn’t go well, it doesn’t seem likely Yurcich ends up taking the job.
• Mason Rudolph saw the field again yesterday after the starter laid an egg in the first half. Unfortunately, his return to playing time is questionable.
(Devlin) Hodges completed seven of his nine passes for 53 yards, but those two missed throws fell into the arms of Jets defenders, giving him six interceptions in the past two games. He threw four picks in Pittsburgh’s loss to Buffalo in Week 15. Heading into this matchup, there was already talk that Hodges would have a short leash, and Tomlin seems to be true to his word.
As Hodges watched on, Mason Rudolph completed 14 of his 20 throws for 129 yards and a touchdown, but suffered a left shoulder injury in the fourth quarter and is out for the game. That now thrusts Hodges back in under center. Rudolph was seeing his first taste of game action since Week 12 when he was benched. [CBS Sports]
What an unfortunate turn of events. He did make this nice throw before he got hurt and had to leave the field again though.

• Here’s a name to chew on for the receivers coach position opening in Stillwater: John Simon of Memphis.
After three years in the NFL, Simon spent 2008-2013 coaching high school football in Dallas, before spending a year as the athletic director for Franklin D. Roosevelt High School. His college stops include Southern Miss, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Arizona State.
Two of Memphis’ top-rated signees for 2020 are receivers, including the No. 4 ranked JUCO pass-catcher. [CRFF]
NFL experience and the top recruiter for the team would fit the mold. The only thing that’s sticky is that he hasn’t worked with Gundy before, something he strongly prefers.
• Chris Carson went down with a hip injury after rushing for 1,200 yards this season – likely done for the year but no confirmation yet 🙁
• Here’s why the Dallas Cowboys lost last night: they didn’t throw it to Blake Jarwin on fourth and eight. Watch No. 89 separate below the seam.
