Report: Arizona State Transfer Linebacker Tate Romney Commits to Oklahoma State
Romney brings 70 career tackles with him to Stillwater.
The Cowboys have added a linebacker from within the conference.
Tate Romney has committed to Oklahoma State, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Romney has spent the past three seasons at Arizona State after starting his college career at BYU. He should have one year of eligibility remaining.
Listed at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Romney made 70 tackles in his three years in Tempe, Arizona, including two tackles for loss and a sack. He was a starter for the Sun Devils as a redshirt freshman in 2023, but a broken arm kept him out for much of the beginning of the 2024 season. He played in 10 games in 2025.
247Sports considers Romney the No. 691 player in the transfer portal, listing him 45th among linebackers. His commitment comes after he visited Stillwater this past weekend.
Romney hails from Chandler, Arizona. He was a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. He went on an LDS mission after high school, getting to BYU in 2022. Romney chose the Cougars over offers from Arizona, Kansas State, Colorado, Utah and others coming out of Chandler High School.
He becomes the second linebacker OSU has added by way of the portal, joining North Texas transfer Ethan Wesloski. Romney is also the fourth portal player the Cowboys have gained from another Big 12 team, joining center Tyler Mercer (Kansas), corner Kanijal Thomas (Kansas State) and corner Maurion Horn (Texas Tech).
