Daily Bullets (Dec. 10): Chuba Snubbed, Glenn Spencer for Head Coach

Published

Bummed that Chuba Hubbard wasn’t announced as a finalist yesterday 🙁 His response was great though.

Bullets Rundown

• Glenn Spencer for head coach
• Texas Bowl drawing some eyeballs
• Bill Self-to-San Antone (probably)

OSU Bullets

• Florida Atlantic football players are stumping for their defensive coordinator-turned-interim head coach Glenn Spencer (yep, that Glenn Spencer) to be Lane Kiffin’s successor in Boca Raton.

Florida Atlantic players have begun publicly endorsing defensive coordinator and interim coach Glenn Spencer as the team’s next full-time head coach.

Multiple FAU players took to Twitter on Monday morning and tweeted they want Spencer to retain the head coaching position. Spencer was promoted to interim head coach when Lane Kiffin took the same position at Ole Miss on Saturday. [Palm Beach Post]

This would be awesome – Glenn Spencer by all accounts is an incredible human and would be a solid CEO of a program, especially at the Conference USA-level.

• A YahooSports piece lists the Texas Bowl as the third-most intriguing bowl game (that isn’t a Playoff game).

It’s always fun to see teams that used to be conference rivals meet up in a bowl game. Though if we’re being greedy it would have been nice to see this former Big 12 matchup between Texas and Texas A&M.

It’s the second straight season that Oklahoma State has faced a former Big 12 foe. A year ago the Cowboys beat Missouri in the Liberty Bowl. This year the crowd in Houston should be a bit more hostile with Texas A&M just up the road. [Yahoo Sports]

The pressure is all on A&M in this game, right? Jimbo Fisher hasn’t won a game that he shouldn’t in College Station. Mike Gundy couldn’t be more of a made man.

• Cowboy alum (and Kansas Jayhawk head coach) Bill Self made the rounds on the news yesterday as rumors continue to swirl that he’s Gregg Popovich’s crown heir.

Yet whenever (Popovich) steps away, whether it’s after he coaches Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics this summer or sometime thereafter, there’s one name that continues to come up from league sources as a possible replacement: Bill Self, the longtime Kansas coach and close friend of Spurs general manager R.C. Buford. [The Athletic $]

Assuming Self never coaches a second (again) in Stillwater, it’s always been a hope that the OKC Thunder would try and poach him, bring the local boy home.

• This is a fascinating point – you’ve got two premier games in the southwest (Rose and Fiesta, three if you count the Cotton) and the rest are southeast (Peach, Sugar, and Orange).

Plenty of NFL stadiums to have games in the Midwest and Northeast, tradition of the bowls be damned.

Love this transparency from Coach Boynton. Would enjoy this from another high profile coach in Stillwater as well.

Non-OSU Bullets

• Encouraging story about how an Appalachian town got incredible internet and is working to eradicate poverty with it
• This NYT piece looking at the business a 15-year-old was running is fascinating
• Great faith-based piece here on “walking and waiting”

Their leadership capabilities looked different but my goodness this is startling:
