Don’t Let a Win Beat You Once

Mike Boynton had some interesting remarks about his team’s capacity to sustain after a win and how his team performs against expectations (or lack thereof).

Oklahoma State has been able to bounce back from losses — it is 6-3 this season after a loss — but seems to let wins linger. After OSU lost 67-56 to Baylor inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Tuesday, Boynton said he felt his team played as if Saturday’s win would help it.

“I think that’s some of it. Again, that goes to growth and maturity,” Boynton said Thursday.

“And again, I’m not making excuses for this team. The expectations were so low and some people said at the start of our season that this is the worst shape this program’s ever been in. So you come in with that and you feel like you’re better, but everybody keeps saying that you’re not. You play better and then people still talk about whether you should be winning games that you actually are winning. So I think psychologically, it’s affected them some. But we have to overcome that. We can’t worry about those things.” [TulsaWorld]

So much of how Boynton – and his team – have been perceived were shaped by expectations – “Jawun, Phil and Underwood are gone? They’ll finish last.

Then Florida State, Oklahoma and KU happen and everyone is bummed when West Virginia, Texas Tech and Baylor happen.

Leveraging Your Resources

While some schools perennially win in February and lose in November (*cough* Texas, Texas A&M *cough), Mike Gundy fades to gray in February then charges ahead in November, per the numbers.

Much like TCU, Oklahoma State has greatly out done themselves on the field compared to where they rank recruiting wise. On average, the Cowboys are a middle of the road team when it comes to recruiting but have the second-best record in conference play since 2012.

This is a program that continues to outdo themselves and by now you must expect nothing but success from Mike Gundy whether he has a mullet or not. [Heartland College Sports]

While the argument that capitalizing on sustained success with more highly touted recruiting classes is a sane one, the capacity for Mike Gundy and Co. to either expose this inefficiency in the recruiting process’ valuation or “do more with less” is made no less remarkable.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Fun interview with incoming grad transfer QB Dru Brown….If you like X’s and O’s, these modern defensive explanations have been great (part two-4-2-5 included and three-unique fronts)….Iowa State’s fifth-year quarterback will be back for a sixth….Adarius Bowman signed a one-year deal in the CFL….Cinderella teams to keep an eye on for the tourney

This is pretty cool – see if you can find Spencer Sanders and C.J. Moore.

Bring Tony home.

Travis Ford thinks this is bad strategy.

You and I could have thrown to Marcell with a 90 passer rating.

This was pretty good.
