Cold Winters in Oklahoma
Cowboy basketball icon Doug Gottlieb talked about how the disdain between Sooners and Cowboys burns in the fall and the fire relatively dies out during the winter for basketball.
Right now, Bedlam beats to the crashing of Riddells, not the bouncing of Spaldings. It would be nice if one season fed into the next and the rivalry burned year-round. It would be nice to hear more of where this came from:
“To me more devastating than losing to Florida in the Elite Eight was losing to OU my last game at old Gallagher,” Gottlieb said. “I woke up hating Oklahoma. I was like that after my first weekend on campus.
“Now? I don’t want to say it’s at an all-time low level. That’s not fair. But I mean, it’s just a shell of what it used to be. I don’t know if it will ever be what it was.” [TulsaWorld]
He astutely pointed out the coaching personalities are the linchpin in the rivalries: how you basketball-hated Kelvin Sampson and how Underwood poking at OU fans have been the embers sustaining the basketball rivalry.
Life Lessons with T. Boone
Oklahoma State’s founding father of football had some thoughts in a recent piece and Berry Tramel tells us what it means for OSU athletics.
“That’s the way to approach life. Be the eternal optimist who is excited to see what the next decade will bring. I remain excited every day, engaged and thrilled in the office and on the road. I thrive on that activity, and I’m going to stick to it, no matter the setback. And I am grateful to have such a strong support network that makes it all the more easy.”
What does Boone’s status mean to OSU? Well, the contract haggles with Mike Gundy are over, and Chad Weiberg is in place as deputy athletic director, ready to take over when Mike Holder retires, and Holder turns 69 next month and doesn’t figure to work as long as Boone. [NewsOK]
Optimism is the recurring thread: of Boone’s recovery, of a smooth transition in the athletic department and years and years of Mike Gundy.
