Perspective on Rickie

Former Cowboy Rickie Fowler has established himself as a favorite on the PGA Tour. And while he wasn’t able to shed the title of “best pro without a major” this weekend, there’s still time and hope he can.

Fowler is highly popular among his peers, gracious to everyone he interacts with in public and remains, with good reason, a fan favorite. He is only 28, which means he has many years left, and ranks ninth in the world.

Certainly, there is no shame in coming up short, while still in your 20s, at the difficult pursuit of winning a major golf championship. This isn’t a 162-game baseball season. Golfers get only four chances per year to claim the sport’s foremost accolade. [The New York Times]

We’re all bummed he came up short this weekend, but not all sports allow you to just sign with the best team. Seeing him finish top-five is encouraging and to see his putter get going like this was awesome.

Poster Child

Oklahoma State, a successful (net positive) mid-tier program, embodies the struggle to financially thrive in major college athletics. A recent interview with OSU president Burns Hargis gives credence to the thought.

It’s been reported in the past that things get contentious with Gundy’s deals. Do you feel like things are healthier now than they’ve been in the past?

Hargis: It’s always been healthy. Any time you get into a negotiation, especially when you don’t have all the money in the world – Oklahoma State is not one of the richest athletic programs around – you have challenges and you have to allocate the money best you can. [NewsOK]

While it wouldn’t be prudent to buy into limited resources be the only point of contention, schools paying more for a combined basketball-football coach tandem are generally selling 20,000+  more seats at football games than OSU does.
