Catch-22

Are Oklahoma State’s championship hopes sunk and sailed by the same concept?

Oklahoma State’s issues are somewhat self-inflicted. Gundy takes pride in running one of the sport’s fastest tempo offenses — they are averaging 90.3 plays in their past three games — and that style has certainly won the Cowboys a lot of games. But it also puts a tremendous strain on the defense when the offense is coming on and off the field so quickly. [The Athletic]

It’s the age-old question of the air raid offenses.

“Here’s our mentality: We’re gunslingers, we’re not scared, we’re going to throw it deep, we’re going to play fast,” said Gundy. “Slowly but surely, we’re building a defense that can play with our team. It’s going to get better and better and better and better. We’re not going to change who we are.” [PFB]

Optimism is reasonable here – coaches getting more experience, adding more and more pieces that fit the system or convincing even better athletes could increase the likelihood of getting quick stops.

Defense First

It was mentioned earlier this week and pictures surfaced of “DEFENSE” printed across the tail of current Cowboys, but a fun anecdote surfaced on how it came to be.

What is there to talk about with the coach who took Oklahoma State to two Final Fours? Defense, of course. Sutton’s teams were hard-nosed, and the former coach let Boynton in on one way he motivated his players behind the scenes.

They wore “DEFENSE” across the back of their practice shorts.

“That’s one of the ways he emphasized it every day,” Boynton said. “When I told him that I would think about doing it again, he lit up. And so we made that happen pretty quickly.” [TulsaWorld]

It’s really fun to think about Coach’s face lighting up and how the program still honors him, from shorts to hiring his (highly qualified) son.

Iron Man

It’s fun to see stereotypical “tough guys” playing college football and today, the Pokes will line up against one.

Watch him pursue Justice Hill, pressure Mason Rudolph and tackle any Cowboy with the ball. Watch him take direct snaps and barrel into Chad Whitener or Calvin Bundage. Watch him, even, run out to defend OSU field goals and extra points or block on ISU punt returns.

Watch him build on the 713 snaps he has played this season.

That’s right.

Seven hundred thirteen.

“There’s a lot of ice baths in there. He’s holding up, but it’s a lot of snaps,” Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said. “We’ve certainly asked a lot of Joel.” [TulsaWorld]

That’s old school.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Five games to catch today and why….Should Power Five leagues move away from divisions?….Former LSU forward turned 76er Ben Simmons spills on “one and dones”….Per ESPN’s fan happiness index, OSU is a lot higher than you’d think (from preseason to now)….Biggest question mark for every top 25 CFB team….How a two-time division winning coach gets laid off

How glorious would it be to see Garth throw at halftime? (not from his suite)

Jawun just seems so likable, nice to see him back in OK last night.

So obnoxious.

Beats the pants off the HireOSUGrads.com shirts of old.

Rick is playing some golf, T-2 at the OHL classic after day two.

Congrats to the Cowgirls on getting in the W column.
