Daily Bullets (Sept. 26): Kansas Allegations and Recruiting Five-Star Bryce Thompson

Here’s a live stream of yesterday’s ceremony for Mr. Pickens.

• OSU-K-State on ESPN+ talk
• Gundy’s name floated for potential openings

OSU Bullets

• Boone pointed out an interesting angle to the Kansas allegations – how will this impact their recruitment of five-star Cowboy target Bryce Thompson?

Thompson will head to Kansas the following week also on an unofficial visit for its Late Night at the Phog outing, but Kansas, once considered a potential front-runner, brings its own baggage to offer. Just this week, the NCAA handed the program a notice of allegations that included coach responsibility for Bill Self and lack of institutional control for KU. In short: KU appears to be headed for a fight with the NCAA and could face significant sanctions. [PFB]

The first thought I had was how this impacts Bill Self and his tenure at Kansas but it could really help to thin the herd on a top-shelf, program-changing recruit the Pokes are after.

• Great thoughts here on the TV rights from the OSU-K-State game going to ESPN+ this weekend – looking at how the cord-cutting trend may ultimately have negative consequences.

My big takeaway? As we go further and further down this road, we start to realize that the unintended consequence (and massive irony) of the great unbundling of cable television is that because of the way content is owned and distributed, the group that seems like it should benefit most from an unbundling — us, the consumer (we’ll be able to pick everything a la carte!) — is often the group that is most negatively affected. [PFB]

From an organizational level, the thing I struggle with is that we can’t draw a straight line from the inconvenience to a dollar reward. As Porter explains, the reward was wrapped up in the Big 12 title game contract windfall.

Former ESPN broadcaster Jeannine Edwards explains the good and the bad well here:

Mike Gundy being considered (by Las Vegas) for possible high profile openings in college football is a bit absurd at this point.

Gundy is in his 15th season as the OSU head coach but has had high-profile interactions with Tennessee, Arkansas and Baylor in recent years, concerning their job openings. Gundy recently told ESPN that he was in Stillwater for good, but that doesn’t stop the American football fan from seeing a guy with antsy feet.

Gundy is listed with 3/1 odds for the Florida State job and 7/1 odds for Michigan and Southern Cal. [NewsOK]

They have Mike Gundy with odds as the second-most-likely candidate for Florida State! I couldn’t imagine him in Tallahassee but wouldn’t he just cut through the ACC like a hot knife in butter? Alligator videos for days with him living in Florida.

• This is great – a four-star running back is coming to town this weekend on an official visit

• President Hargis hit the nail on the head with these remarks in Mr. Pickens’ service yesterday:

• SP+ has the Pokes favored by three in Saturday’s game – and doesn’t advise taking the Pokes with the 4.5 point spread
