Daily Bullets (Sept. 27): Boone’s Generosity, Telling Stat for Saturday’s Game

The most bizarre thing about playing K-State: they’re one of the few teams left that still huddle on offense.

OSU Bullets

• This OSU Football stat really surprised me – and could be a great tell for how the game will end up on Saturday.

I’ve probably popped this on here before, but Gundy’s record when leading or trailing at halftime is remarkable. Here’s a look.

When leading: 96-8
When trailing: 23-48 [PFB]

• One of the more incredible qualities of Boone Pickens was how his generosity came with relatively “no-strings-attached”.

(Burns) Hargis and (Mike) Holder insist that Pickens wasn’t a meddler. Because Pickens’ investments in OSU exceeded a reported $650 million, he wanted to be informed on all developments related to university matters and Cowboys football.

At the same time, Hargis says, Pickens never ordered any OSU leadership figure to do anything. There were suggestions and expressions of preferences, but never any orders. [TulsaWorld]

While you have to imagine Pickens’ preferences were considered greatly, the only major decision you ever heard him influence was Holder being the athletic director.

• I like these keys to winning the game for the Pokes tomorrow.

Wildcat coach Chris Klieman brings a personal streak of 24 consecutive victories to Boone Pickens Stadium. At North Dakota State, he had a 69-6 record and won four FCS national titles.

OSU’s Mike Gundy was criticized for conservative play-calling during last week’s 36-30 loss at Texas. To overcome an above-average Kansas State defense, Gundy has to give Spencer Sanders the freedom to improvise and make plays. [TulsaWorld]

That seems to be the key, right? If you’re going to overcome your average defense, your offense has to do something really spectacular and put some serious points on the board.

• Jenni Carlson had a neat piece on the friendship between Mike Holder and T. Boone Pickens

• When you think about the gold standard of a 1,000-yard-rusher and how Chuba is well over halfway there through four games, that’s super impressive.

• Some tip times were announced on some non-conference basketball games:
