Daily Bullets (Sept. 8): Cornelius the Rare Find, Rickie’s Playing Well, Chuba’s Poke Comp

Gameday, week two.
Taylor the Unicorn

How unusual is it to have a fifth-year senior making his first start at quarterback?

(Taylor) Cornelius arrived on campus as a walk-on in 2014, had a redshirt season and then attempted only 24 passes in nine games over three years while primarily backing up Mason Rudolph. Now, as a fifth-year senior, Cornelius is coming off a victory in his first career start.

Four Big 12 quarterbacks who started Week One games – West Virginia’s Will Grier, Iowa State’s Kyle Kempt, Kansas senior Peyton Bender and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray – began their careers at other Power Five schools. Jalan McClendon, who shared snaps at Baylor with returning sophomore starter Charlie Brewer, is a graduate transfer from North Carolina State.

”I think you’re going to see quarterbacks across the country that get a year or two into it, and if they’re not the starter, they’re going to leave and go other places with the transfer rules that have lightened up so much,” Gundy said. ”He’s paid his dues, and now he’s starter. He’s earned that right, but I don’t think you’re going to see a lot of that in the future of the college football. I think it’s going to go the other way.” [Yahoo Sports]

So it’s not unusual that a guy later in his career would be making his first start (traditionally true in college football – not in 2018) but just not at the school he started.

Chuba Hubba

Chuba Hubbard electrified in his debut, leaving tire marks in his wake and Bears left looking for his tracks.

*gulp* Does he remind us of any other recent Pokes?

Hubbard, like (Tyreek) Hill during his time in Stillwater, is a dual-sport athlete on the Cowboy football team and the OSU track and field team.

They possess world-class speed that can separate them from tacklers any time the defense foolishly allows them to get into open space on the football field.

With this speed comes an unmistakable aura surrounding Hubbard this season, probably because many people in the stadium know he is a three-time Canadian track national champion and could burn every defender on the field if he breaks free from the line of scrimmage. [O’Colly]

Welcome Back

Rickie Fowler is sitting in a good spot going into the weekend at the BMW Championship.

Oh, Rickie Fowler hasn’t played in three weeks? How about welcoming himself back with a pair of manly 65s and a position just behind the leader. He’s driving the hell out of the ball and inside the top 10 in putting, too. I openly wondered whether his spot on the Ryder Cup team would be up for grabs because of his injury. I’ll keep the rest of my takes to myself. [CBS Sports]

OSU and NCAA Notes

How does Corndog’s performance affect Gundy’s early vote of confidence in him?….Gundy is familiar with South Alabama’s new coach….What OSU/OU players are coaching high school football in OKC….Mark Cooper talks South Alabama, players to watch and makes his prediction for tonight’s game….Tramel has K-State upsetting Mississippi State today (the game to watch)

Fun number here on Holliday’s Cowboys:

Have mercy.

Naw – they’re playing back-to-back games against the Pokes over the next couple of years.

Dan Bailey out of running for the Jets job.

Ambitious moves for the Wildcats.
