Four-Star Shooting Guard Donovan Williams includes OSU in Top Three
The Cowboys make Williams’ top three. He’ll select a school in a week.
Donovan Williams is down to three schools, and Oklahoma State is still in contention.
Williams announced that he is down to OSU, Kansas State and Texas on Monday. He will pick a program next Monday. Rivals list Williams as a four-star shooting guard. 247Sports’ composite ranking lists him as the No. 147 prospect in the 2020 class.
Out of Lincoln-North Star in Nebraska, Williams was initially committed to be a Cornhusker before decommitting in December. He tore his ACL last spring, stunting recruiting momentum entering his senior summer of AAU ball, but since his return to action in January, Williams has lit up the scoreboard. He averaged 28.3 points and 8.1 rebounds a game in his final 14 games of high school hoops.
OSU and coach Mike Boynton have been involved with Williams since January. Since Williams was offered an OSU scholarship, though, four-star small forward Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and grad transfer shooting guard Ferron Flavors Jr. have committed to be Cowboys.
OSU has just one scholarship left to give in the 2020 cycle. Williams is one of four names that have been circulating to take it with the others being four-star forward JT Thor, Tulsa transfer Jeriah Horne and Western Michigan transfer Michael Flowers.
Roster-wise it seems like it would make the most sense for Boynton to add either Thor or Horne, both power forwards, to replace Cameron McGriff. However, with the height OSU will have in its frontcourt with the likes of 6-6 Cade Cunningham and 6-4 Isaac Likekele, it’s possible Boynton could take another guard on use that length to switch up some defensive assignments.
Williams has had to cancel official visits because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he did take an unofficial visit to Stillwater alongside Moncrieffe in January.
If Williams committed to OSU, it would bump Boynton’s 2020 class from No. 10 in the national rankings to No. 9. The Cowboys already have the top class in the Big 12 as it stands right now.
