Grayson Boomer, Highest-Rated Signee in 2019 Recruiting Class, Tore ACL in Camp

The highest-rated signee from Oklahoma State’s 2019 recruiting class is done for the season.

Bill Haisten of the Tulsa World reported Tuesday morning that former four-star recruit Grayson Boomer, a 6-foot-5 tight end from Collinsville, Okla., tore his ACL earlier this month in fall camp. A torn ACL requires at minimum a six-month recovery which will likely end any hope of him playing as a true freshman.

“The summer had gone really well (for Grayson),” Ashley Boomer, Grayson’s mother, told the World. “The coaches and (medical personnel) at OSU will do a great job with him. He’ll come back from this, but it’s really hard.”

Rumors of a potential injury to Boomer had swirled in recent days but the extent of the injury was unknown.

On Aug. 9, video of a healthy Boomer topped with a helmet and drenched in sweat made its way to Twitter via the Cowboy Football Twitter account. The video showed Gundy in a selfie position quizzing him about how much fun he was having.

Boomer was not included in OSU’s depth chart that was released late last week. Jelani Woods and Logan Carter were listed starters at Cowboy back, as expected, but news of Dayton Metcalf being named the No. 2 behind both Woods and Carter raised some curiosity about Boomer’s injury.

Coming out of high school last year, Boomer was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 2 prospect in Oklahoma and a top-10 tight end prospect nationally. As a recruit, he committed to Oklahoma State in late 2017 over Oklahoma, Ohio State and others. He later talked with PFB about why he chose the Pokes, citing an intensely orange-tinted fandom that dates back to his childhood.

“I’ve just been a fan all my life,” he said. “Actually growing up, I was kind of more leaning towards OU before I even had the offers. I was like, ‘Ah, I kinda want to play at OU,’ because my great grandfather actually played at OU. But when all the offers came and it was all right in front of me, I had the options. I went and visited everywhere, and (OSU) just felt like home.”
