J.D. King’s 36 Carries Against WVU Set New High Mark in Gundy Era

“Twenty-seven had a lot of work — 36 carries for a true freshman is a lot of work,” said Mike Gundy in the aftermath of Oklahoma State’s 50-39 win over West Virginia on Saturday in Morgantown.

It’s a lot of work for anyone, much less a true freshman. In fact, it’s more work than any running back in the Mike Gundy has ever endured.

There have been just eight individual performances in the Gundy era in which a player has run it 30-plus times in a single game. Three of those have come this season, and the top one is now King’s.

Rank Player Year Opp. Carries Yards Average TD
1 J.D. King 2017 West Virginia 36 142 3.9 1
2 Justice Hill 2017 Texas 33 117 3.5 0
3 Joseph Randle 2012 Texas Christian 32 126 3.9 1
4 Desmond Roland 2015 Washington 32 123 3.8 0
5 Mike Hamilton 2005 Texas 31 194 6.3 0
6 Desmond Roland 2013 Texas Tech 31 96 3.1 3
7 Justice Hill 2017 Texas Tech 30 164 5.5 0
8 Keith Toston 2009 Colorado 30 172 5.7 1

“The good thing about J.D. is he’s very, very mature,” said Gundy after the game. “He’s similar to a few players we’ve had in the past. His mental approach and mental makeup is more like a junior.

“Some young men are that way and some of them aren’t. I don’t think the stage gets too big for him. He has a lot of confidence in himself, and he’s highly intelligent. Five brings a different world to the table, his ability. The two of them work really well together.”

Yes they do. Hill returned in the second half and had 86 yards and a pair of game-sealing TDs of his own, but it was King who carried OSU throughout.

And if Oklahoma State is going to be insistent on continuing to run the ball (and I imagine they will be), then 27 + 5 are going to get a whole host of touches over the remaining four weeks.
