END OF GAME: OSU Wins 55-13
4th Quarter

In mop-up time, the Cowboys kept their foot on the gas (and on the throat of the Jags), forcing seven punts and gaining a pick-6 for USA’s eight second half drives.

USAdrive

8:06: 4Q: OSU 55 — USA 13: Cowboys force a punt with a sack by Amen Ogbongbemiga and Cam Murray. Cowboy ball at OSU 25.

10:26: 4Q: OSU 55 — USA 13: Wudtee finds J.D. King for a 25-yard touchdown. In doing so he ran over a USA defender and then decided to debrief said defender face-to-face.

Another flag, another penalty. Mike Gundy’s postgame presser will probably only be beat by his postgame pep talk with the team.

12:16: 4Q: OSU 48 — USA 13: Keondre Wudtee in. Offsetting personal foul penalties and Logan Carter, the second Cowboy (Kenneth Edison-McGruder) is ejected from the game for targeting.

12:38: 3Q: OSU 48 — USA 13: Cowboys get another stop on defense with Cam Murray tripping up QB Cole Garvin to save what would have been a third-down conversion. Cowboys take over at USA 42-yard line.

14:10: 4Q: OSU 48 — USA 13: Tylan Wallace added to his total (see above) and Chuba Hubbard took the rock 22 yards and to the house to extend the lead. That is the longest run by a Cowboy RB tonight.

3rd Quarter

0:02: 3Q: OSU 41 — USA 13: Cornelius hits Tylan Wallace for 25 yards on a crossing route. Cowboys let the third quarter expire.

0:39: 3Q: OSU 41 — USA 13: OSU’s defense forces another three-and-out and Stoner returns the punt 14 yards to the OSU 40.

1:44: 3Q: OSU 41 — USA 13: Cowboys settle for a field goal and Matt Ammendola keeps his streak alive, this time from 37 yards.

3:24: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: Cornelius finds Jelani Woods on a post for a big 32-yard gain.

4:00: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: OSU defense forces a three-and-out. USA boots the ball to the OSU 48.

4:17: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: Cornelius gives another one away, throwing an interception in the end zone.

4:39: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: Cornelius breaks loose for a 34-yard run. First and goal.

5:11: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: A rolling Cornelius finds Tyron Johnson who turns on the jets and erases 32 yards worth of turf.

5:21: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: Cowboys get another stop and this punt is bobbled but successful. OSU to start deep in its own territory at the 12.

6:31: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: OSU’s defense gets a stop but a “leaping” penalty during the punt gives USA 15 yards and its fifth first down due to penalty.

9:06: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: A.J. Green has a nice interception and return that is called back because of a holding call on… A.J. Green.

9:56: 3Q: OSU 38 — USA 13: Devin Harper steps right into the path of Evan Orth’s pass across the middle. He gone. He got 7 points. Cowboys finally took it back.

11:14: 3Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: As soon as the offense appears to be getting into a rhythm, the Cowboys are flagged for back-to-back penalties (hands to the face and intentional grounding). Third-and-43 turns into fourth-and-29 after the best run of the night by Justice Hill. Ball punted back to USA. Returned to the 18-yard line.

12:15: 3Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: Tylan Wallace makes a big-boy catch despite a pass interference. See updated Tylan Tracker.

12:47: 3Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: On third-down-and-2, a bobbled catch bounces off of every part of Justin Phillips’ body but he’s unable to reel it in. Jags force to punt it back to the Pokes. Stoner’s fair catch starts OSU at its own 19.

13:59: 3Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: Cornelius comes up short on his second pass of the second half and it was called an interception. After review, there was apparently not enough to overturn. Turnover battle is 2-0 in favor of the Sun Belt team.

15:00: 3Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: Chuba Hubbard catches the opening kick of the second half and returns 21 yards to the OSU 29-yard line.

Halftime Thoughts

There will definitely be some teaching points for the coaches from the first half. The Cowboys had three penalties for 42 yards including that targeting call on Kenneth Edison-McGruder and a roughing-the-passer on Calvin Bundage.

The defense gave up a couple too many third-down conversions and chunk plays to a senior QB, in his first career start, who came into 2018 with one (!) pass attempt under his belt EVER.

OSU’s offense struggled at times and relied on some somewhat surprising fourth-down attempts that were converted. Cornelius looks better than last week, definitely more comfortable but has still missed a few throws. The Jags defense has done a good job of keeping OSU’s RBs (even Justice Hill) in their business suits and plastic-framed glasses, stuck in the conference room at the Daily Planet. We’ll see if they can break out in Period 3.

Who takes snaps in the second half? You’ve got to think Mike Gundy wants to let Cornelius continue to build confidence. I’d say he’s a lock to start the third and if the Pokes can push the lead out even more, we might see who relieves him.

OSU got plenty of chunk plays off of the arm of Cornelius in the first half, especially compared to how USA was limiting them on the ground.

2nd Quarter

0:21: 2Q: OSU 31 — USA 13: Justice Hill keeps his feet churning and rides the mob into the orange section of turf for his second touchdown.

0:27 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 13: Justice makes something out of nothing for 11 yards in the air. A roughing-the-passer call puts OSU at first and goal at the 2-yard line.

1:54: 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 13: Cornelius moves the Cowboys down the field with a 19-yard pass to Tylan Wallace and then a scurries and hits Dillon Stoner for 20 yards on a nice play.

2:57: 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 13: The Jags pay off their great starting field position with a quick two-play scoring drive. A high snap results in a blocked extra-point attempt. Jags hanging around in this one.

3:41: 2Q: OSU 24 — 7: A fumbled snap on the punt attempt spells disaster, and a continuing ugly trend in OSU’s special teams. Jags get the ball deep in OSU territory.

3:48: 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 7: After back-to-back chunk plays to Tylan Wallace to get them out of the hole, OSU’s offense stalls.

5:13: 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 7: OSU’s defense stands but USA downs their punt at theOSU 1-yard line.

6:11: 2Q: OSU 24 — USA 7: Cornelius swings it right (backwards pass so it’s a rush) to Justice Hill who erases 3 yards and makes the corner miss. 7 more for the Pokes.

7:46: 2Q: OSU 17 — USA 7: Tylan Wallace comes back for a short pass on fourth-and-6 (!). OSU is 3-for-3 on fourth downs… against South Alabama… in the first half.

10:06: 2Q: OSU 17 — USA 7: Jags receiver Jamarius Way has a fourth-down conversion in his hands and Malcolm Rodriguez’s attempted tackle is enough to cause a turnover on downs.

12:31: 2Q: OSU 17 — USA 7: Kenneth Edison-McGruder gets flagged for targeting as he forceably escorts Jalen Tolbert out of bounds. Ruling upheld. 15 yards and a short night for the ninth president.

13:23: 2Q: OSU 17 — USA 7: After a 20-yard catch by Tyron, the offense stutters and  13-yard sack sets up a 45-yard kick. Ammendola nails it to push his streak to 13-straight.

OSU gets something for their trouble but USA’s defense has been able to handcuff Cornelius a bit so far.

1st Quarter

0:20: 1Q: OSU 14 — USA 7: Cornelius finds Dillon Stoner, who squeezes 15 yards out of nothing, and then Landon Wolf for 16 more. Chuba Hubbard takes 18 on the ground to put OSU at the USA 37 as the first quarter runs out.

0:50: 1Q: OSU 14 — USA 7: Kawaan Baker makes a couple of Cowboys miss before stumbling into the end zone. OSU up only a score at the end of the the first.

1:12: 1Q: OSU 14 — USA 0: Evan Orth hits Jamarius Way on the sideline for an 18-yard pass to convert on third down, just before Calvin Bundage hits him to get dinged for roughing the passer.

4:05: 1Q: OSU 14 — USA 0: Tyron Johnson takes the handoff on fouth and goal and scurries into the promised land.

5:16: 1Q: OSU 7 — USA 0: Tyron is still in the building. Catches a 25-yard pass to get OSU into the red zone.

6:30: 1Q: OSU 7 — USA 0: After a tackle for loss by Enoch Smith Jr., the Cowboys dial up the pressure on third and long. Jordan Brailford and Jarrell Owens force a slide sack back at the USA 6. Short punt to the USA 33-yard line.

8:30: 1Q: OSU 7 — USA 0: Brock Martin earns his first career sack. Second and 13.

8:38: 1Q: OSU 7 — USA 0: On his next try, Cornelius rolls right and hits Tyron Johnson for a 60-yard dash.

On the next play, he draws a line from the 11-yard line to Tylan Wallace in pay dirt. Pokes on the board.

9:19: 1Q: OSU 0 — USA — 0: Calvin Bundage plugs the hole and causes a loss of 1 on third-and-short. OSU receives the punt and will tee it off again from its own 29.

10:22: 1Q: OSU 0 — USA — 0: OSU goes three-and-out in its first possession. Hockett’s punt bounces into the end zone for a touchback. Cowboys only had three three-and-out against Missouri State, start with one tonight.

11:17: 1Q: OSU 0 — USA — 0: On third and 14, an originally-called fumble recovered by OSU was overturned after Evan Orth does a head stand courtesy of Malcolm Rodriguez and Devin Harper. OSU would force a turnover on downs.

OSU wins the toss, defers. Jaguars will start at their own 18-yard line.

CB Tanner McCalister and WR LC Greenwood, who both missed #okstate‘s opener, are expected to play, per the Cowboy Radio Network.
