Porter’s Notebook on Oklahoma State-Texas

More thoughts on a bummer of a loss at Texas.

I emptied the tank on my 10 thoughts here, but wanted to clear out the rest of my notebook before moving on to next weekend’s OSU-Kansas State game. Here’s what I was writing and thinking about on Saturday night.

• Gundy couldn’t say the name, “Ehlinger” in two tries in the pregame with Maria Taylor so I think we have our answer as to why he uses numbers all the time.

• Mike Holder rocking a Mesa Vista hat in honor of Boone Pickens the last two weeks is a MEGA flex. MV is Boone’s monster ranch in west Texas. Here’s the hat at Tulsa. He had the same one on in Austin.

• By the way, no pics from us because Texas wouldn’t credential us because we don’t have a print publication. 2019.

• Speaking of Boone, this was great.

• Why does Herbie always think Gundy is running OSU’s offense? Gundy is running Holgorsen’s offense, and everyone else is using their variation of it, no?

• Logan Carter blocking for LD Brown vs. Jelani Woods blocking for Chuba Hubbard is, uh, noticeably different.

• Everything Chuba does looks awesome. His mouthpiece connector snapped in the first quarter and was hanging out and it looked like he could line up for Miami in the late 90s and fit in fine.

• My note after Sanders dropped a pair of seeds early in the game: NORMAL FRESHMAN OPENING QB DRIVE AGAINST A TOP-12 TEAM IN PRIMETIME TO START CONFERENCE PLAY.

• He’s so dang fun.

• Did I hear Chris Fowler say that Spencer was fishing on Gundy’s land the other day and just walked in his house and grabbed something out of the fridge? Would watch this 30-minute show on ESPN+!

• Austin actually sounded loud! Not a compliment!

• Chuba’s 37 carries were the 11th-most in school history.

• He’s had so many, but this one has to be in the Tylan pantheon. This is not normal.

• I don’t like many things about Ehlinger, but I do love how he rolls the ball over in his hand at the last minute before he tosses it. It’s kinda awesome.

• Amen’s white spats were ?.

• Herman punting on the first drive and then not kicking the FG at the start of the second quarter … all part of what led to this photo from me. I wish I’d been able to use it on Twitter with the headline: Rent’s Due — Pokes Win Six Straight. Alas.

• The phrase “tough Canadian” made me lol. It’s not untrue, but for whatever reason, it cracked me up.

• Stoner’s drop in the first half was shades of McCleskey in 2017. It wasn’t a great throw, but it hit him in the tummy, he came down with it with two arms around it and somehow didn’t catch it. Not his greatest play.

• Lol at this.

• It ain’t great.

• Texas had two passing plays: Bubble to Duvernay and find somebody deep. They worked, but not exactly mega-diverse.

• Moar McCray. He’s been great. I wish OSU would go to all of its receivers more so not really a groundbreaking statement from me, but he’s been better than I thought he would be so far this season.

• OSU is now 51-7 in the Gundy era when it turns teams over 3+ times in a game.

• It was 21-20 at halftime for the second straight week. You know, two traditional powerhouses up by a single point over OSU at the break two weeks in a row.

• Jake McClure honorable mention uni Heisman.

• This is filthy.

• Texas annoys me. I am annoyed. OU’s arrogance is at least earned!

• My favorite random moment of the game was Holder begging for a flag on the sideline after Sanders got waylaid and Gundy hitting his head indicating a personal foul.

• OSU spied a potential Heisman candidate with a true freshman who was playing baseball for a school in Edmond like five months ago and Gundy claims he recruited because he was good at stealing bases in high school. I don’t know if this says more about Ford or the state of OSU’s defense, but I do know there is no longer any Ford stock left. PFB is a majority stakeholder, and I personally own about a third of what remained after that.

• A thing that was said in our Slack that I agree with: I like the way Tylan throws the ball back to the official.

• So good.

• I went from thinking Sanders didn’t have enough juice in his arm to thinking he maybe had too much. He threw some heaters in this game.

• 60 yards in the air. Normal.

• Just me or did the goal post look tiny with everything removed behind the end zone? It was like shooting free throws on an end of the floor at a NBA game with nobody sitting behind the goal. Has to mess with kickers at least a little bit.

• I mean, how close was this?!

• This will not be popular, but I kind of liked the fake FG call. It was a perfect time for it because it was a horrendous spot in the game for it. That’s when you actually want to call that play. This may not have been great though …

• I loved Spencer pitching it on the play where they called him down because his knee hit the turf. It wasn’t designed, but more QBs should do that. Remind me that I said this next time Sanders does it and fumbles it into oblivion.

• Re: fake injuries, I enjoyed this suggestion from @DougD in The Chamber: Sit out for the rest of the drive is an easy clean rule that makes all the sense in the world.

• I legitimately thought OSU was going to win it until Sanders threw the pick in the fourth. Is this how OU fans feel playing OSU? If so, I envy them.

• A tale of two QB reads. Spencer will get there. Eventually.

• I think my best comp after this game is the 2016 Baylor game. Feels like OSU was as good, if not better and just couldn’t take advantage.

• When the SATs hit your mailbox after high school debate practice.
