After one of the more wild days in Oklahoma State’s football history, Mike Gundy is set to return as the Cowboys’ coach in 2025.

Oklahoma State announced that it and Gundy have agreed on a new contract “with terms that benefit Oklahoma State University, OSU student-athletes and Cowboy Football.” OSU stated details will be announced when the contract is signed. Pokes Report first reported that Gundy and OSU agreed to terms Saturday morning.

The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents met early Friday morning in a special meeting “for the purpose of considering evaluation/assessment and other information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football staff.” That meeting lasted about two hours, and the regents were joined by OSU president Dr. Kayse Shrum and athletic director Chad Weiberg. The meeting was almost entirely conducted in executive session. Gundy was not present.

Afterward, board chair Jimmy Harrel said a plan was established but didn’t share any details.

In the early afternoon, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that OSU and Gundy were in a “standoff,” as OSU asked Gundy to restructure his five-year rollover contract that sees him make $7.75 million in 2024. According to USA Today, that made Gundy the highest-paid coach in the Big 12, ranking 17th in salary nationally.

John Holcomb reported not long after that Gundy had until 5 p.m. Friday to make a decision, but after that deadline went by, more reports started surfacing that Gundy and OSU were in negotiations and heading toward a reconstructed deal.

Gundy has been OSU’s coach since 2005, amassing a 169-88 record in that stretch and making 18 straight bowl games. That streak snapped this season, as Gundy’s Pokes — picked third in the Big 12 preseason poll — finished 3-9 and 0-9 in Big 12 play. Outside of the play on the field, Gundy got into hot water in early November about people voicing negative opinions usually being the ones who can’t “pay their own bills.”

OSU fired coordinators Kasey Dunn and Bryan Nardo on Wednesday, so some of the first work Gundy will have to do with his new deal is to hire a pair of new coordinators. With his newly structured contract, that might be something OSU has a say in.

This puts an end to a saga that got messy at points, but in the end, the Cowboys still have their coach.
