Cade Cunningham Finishes Tops in Rivals’ Final 2020 Ranking

From No. 15 to No. 1.

A few weeks ago, Cade Cunningham claimed the No. 1 spot in 247Sports’ final ranking for the 2020 class, and the Cowboys future point guard made it two for two with the major recruiting sites Monday.

Rivals put out its final 2020 ranking on Monday, and Cunningham, who signed with Oklahoma State in November, retained his No. 1 ranking. He edge out future G League star Jalen Green and USC signee Evan Mobley. Those three have been jumping around as the top three recruits in the country for about a year now.

Perhaps the most exciting part about Cunningham being the top dog on 247Sports’ and Rivals’ rankings is his climb.

On the Aug. 16, 2018 edition of Rivals’ 2020 rankings, Green was No. 1, Mobley was No. 3 and Cunningham was back at No. 15. The recruiting world has its darlings and while being the 15th-best prospect in the country is nothing to sneeze at, it isn’t too frequent that a player can climb that high in those elite-level spots.

In November 2018, Cunningham was up to 11 while Green and Mobley were No. 1 and 2.

Cunningham’s big jump didn’t come until the start of the AAU season last summer. On May 5, 2019, Cunningham was up to No. 5. Mobley overtook Green for the top spot in their then two-horse race.

Then by the end of last summer, which saw Cunningham win MVP on the Nike EYBL circuit, Cunningham got up to second and bumped down Green. Cunningham stayed in second through the early signing period in November, but as his prep squad Montverde dominated the country and he won the Naismith High School Player of the Year, Cunningham made it all the way to the top.

It’s a story OSU loyalists can get behind — a story of Cunningham not simply being given the title of the nation’s top recruit, but something he had to play dark horse for much of the process.
