A Different Perspective

Addressing pass coverage for the Cowboys this season will be former Notre Dame, Georgia and Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator and current defensive analyst Brian VanGorder.

When Gundy hired VanGorder in the spring, the coach’s experience certainly had everything to do with it. But VanGorder’s knowledge of multiple defensive schemes was a factor.

“Everything in today’s game is so much about the perimeter and what goes on on the perimeter,” VanGorder said. “So however you align it, 3-3-5, 3-4, 4-3’s a little bit different, but I think the overlaps of outside linebackers and ‘stars’ or nickel-type defenders in college football has become bigger and more important in respect to being able to defend the whole field and that’s really what college offenses make you do.” [TulsaWorld]

We’re all concerned about the secondary but having VanGorder assisting Spencer with the issue should only be helpful.

Dramatic Improvement

In the midst of profiling center Brad Lundblade is a wonderful reality about the Cowboy run game.

With Lundblade guiding the offensive line, the Cowboys went from averaging 3.6 yards per carry and 126.8 yards per game in 2015 to averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 171.0 yards per game in 2016. Oklahoma State’s running backs totaled 25 rushing touchdowns in 2016, a mark which matched the two-year total from 2014 and 2015 combined. [OKState.com]

It felt like a long climb but for the first time since Wickline left, there’s confidence in the run game.
