Three Thoughts

• After yesterday’s article by Berry Tramel – I still have no idea what caused Mike Gundy to give PFB the boot when he did.

You guys know the rest. Gundy talked about the China virus in April, and I crushed him for it. Then the Chuba stuff. But I wanted to make it publicly clear that he called me in March before any of that happened, before COVID-19 shut down spring ball. [PFB]

We’re all free to our opinions (myself included) – and given the general nature of our (PFB’s) content, I struggle to grasp the fragility, the need-to-control that doesn’t allow PFB to talk to a few players and ask him a question every week.

You’re not booting Thayer Evans here, Mike. You’re booting somewhere around nine Oklahoma State University degrees and more than a handful of season tickets over a couple of stray football articles.

Is Spencer vs. Spencer the next Mason Rudolph vs. Baker Mayfield? The next Brandon Weeden vs. Landry Jones? Players are the characters in this story and it’s worth being excited about this Bedlam chapter of the Spencers.

• Some say past performance is the best indicator for future performance – and those folks should be pretty excited about this OSU defense.

…Over the last six games, which included Bedlam and the Houston Bowl against Texas A&M, the Cowboys allowed only 23.0 points a game.

They even had a pair of games where they allowed only 13 points.

That’s practically a shutout in today’s game. [NewsOK]

Two Quotes

• Josh Holliday lines out the two people the new O’Brate Stadium will impact the most: the fan and the recruit.

“Do I think it’ll really resonate with people when they come visit? I hope when we get back to that time that it sure does,” Holliday said. “I can’t wait to welcome a kid to campus for the first time and be standing here in my office, which I’ve never had the chance to do just yet. I think it’s gonna be a game-changer for us.” [PFB]

This will be a crazy football season – take the usual “this guy pulled his hamstring on Friday and can’t play” and multiply it by 1,000.

UCA’s win over Austin Peay last Saturday was decided in part because all of APSU’s long snappers evidently had to quarantine and missed the trip, and a new long snapper predictably botched two punt snaps.

That’s probably not the only time something like that will happen… [ESPN]

One Question

• If you had to lose a position group on the Cowboy Football team for a game… who do you take out?

Assuming you can’t skate by with Cowboy Backs or one of the kickers (that the other specialist might be able to do), I think I’d go linebackers as much as I love Amen and Rodriguez.
