Third Down Pros
The defensive third down-woes displayed in the Tulsa game didn’t make the trip to the Gulf Coast with the Pokes on Friday.
The Jaguars’ first first down came in the second quarter, and that drive stalled out into a missed field goal. The first four drives of the third quarter ended in two turnovers and two three-and-outs.
And after allowing Tulsa to convert 16 third downs last week, Oklahoma State held the Jaguars to a 10-percent (1-of-10) success rate, erasing its one big deficiency.
“I think we played well,” defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer said. “Executed well. Got off the field better.” [TulsaWorld]
Lots of third down stops + forcing turnovers > yards allowed.
STAR Replacements
With Calvin Bundage suspended for a targeting foul for the first half of the Pitt game and Edison-McGruder day-to-day, Robert Allen has some ideas on who will help fill the hole.
The silver lining there is senior Kirk Tucker is like a high quality backup behind Edison-McGruder and Bundage there. The question is depth and expanding it and remember there is always a chain reaction with defensive injuries in the back seven as that is where so many of your special teams players come from (Tucker and Ogbongbemiga).
I would expect to see more of red-shirt freshman Devin Harper (6-1, 240). You could see a safety coached up to help at the star especially for the first half of the Pitt game. [GoPokes $$$]
McGruder and Bundage may be the most athletic two-deep of any position on the defensive side of the ball. Filling in with a redshirt freshman and special teams aces for a half could be interesting. Trying out the 3-3-5 could be an idea but not ideal against a run-heavy Pitt team.
