PFB Comments of the Week (December 15)

Published

on

Oklahoma State fell to Wichita State last Saturday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Pokes played the Shockers close for most of the game before WSU pulled away late. The Cowboys will have a shot at another top-25 team this weekend at Florida State.

While the Cowboy basketball team prepares for Florida State, Mike Gundy and the rest of the football coaching staff hit the recruiting trail. Gundy even helicoptered around Oklahoma and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

The recruiting trail is heating up as the early signing period approaches. With plenty of storylines to soak in, here are our comments of the week.

1. Kasey Dunn

I think he needs to get a promotion to Co-OC. What he does in recruiting is huge and I think the impact would be felt throughout the offense if he was moved up. The talent level at wide receiver this year was far and away tops in the nation and looking toward next year Johnson, McCleskey, Stoner, Wallace, Alexander, and Moore looks like another top 10 level group with only 1 upperclassman that is all a testament to Dunn’s recruiting and teaching. –Bbjd on Kasey Dunn.

What Kasey Dunn has accomplished during his time in Stillwater has been remarkable. It’s nice to see him getting some recognition this year. He deserves a raise, and hopefully a chance to retire as a Cowboy.

2. Spencer Sanders Competition Level

Anyone know what other players he’s played against and where they’re committed?

It’s one thing to win POY in a state like Texas, but if it’s not against top talent, then how can we compare or think it will translate to college? Did he beat TCU’s top S commit by going deep? Did he out-run Texas top DE on an option play?

Numbers are great, but can we look deeper for a better support as to how he will translate?

Also, anyone know how many sports he plays/played in HS? –GeoPoke on Spencer Sanders.

This one was thought provoking.

Sanders hasn’t faced any particularly tough talent this season. He will have to face Ryan Coxe and the Highland Park Scots this weekend though. Ryan would likely face Manvel in the state championship, and their defense is loaded. Sanders faced better talent his sophomore season when Ryan was a 6A school. He lead the Raiders to an undefeated regular season before eventually losing to the Allen Eagles in the playoffs, completing a 13-1 season. Sanders plays basketball in addition to football.

3. Quarterback Competition

With Corndog, I believe we can be another 10 win team. Our offense is going to be a (A-) rather than (A+) from this year. Call me crazy but I think next year we will be a (B- or C+) defense next year. Future is bright, I like Taylor this next year though. He hasnt given me a reason to not believe in him. –Isiah Smith on QB competition next season.

At this point, with Spencer Sanders not arriving until the summer, most believe the starting quarterback job is Corndog’s to lose. Taylor Cornelius has shown that he is more than capable of being the quarterback of this team, albeit in a limited sample size. Sanders will get a chance to compete for the job though, and whoever wins the job will have to play knowing that they could lose their job at any point.

4. OSU Playing WSU Close

The claim that we lost this game early is false. Did we miss opportunities? Yes, but being down 3 going into the half? The opposite of out of the game. I don’t mean to undervalue the missed chances, but from the looks of it, that defense could stop a semi rolling down Highway 51 on a dime. There were moments in the second half where we were going on a run, but started to falter. Believe me, from where we were sitting, if we were out of it in the first half, I would have left at the half. –GeoPoke on the OSU-WSU basketball game.

The Cowboys were technically in the game up until the final minutes. Sometimes that’s the difference between good teams and average ones. The energy early on from OSU was incredible, and if they play with that energy and intensity all season, OSU won’t finish last in the Big 12. However, this team struggles on offense. There just isn’t much talent on that end of the court. Hopefully the Pokes can improve their offense and make a run in Big 12 play.

5. Recruiting The State Of Texas

I think one aspect, when it comes to a drop in recruits in Texas, that you’re not acknowledging is the rise of Texas schools and the increase in competition in Texas. A&M went to the SEC and really improved their recruiting (I believe we lost 3 or 4 committed kids to them over the years). That also opened up a SEC piepline to come into the state. The rise of Baylor and TCU have also made it much tougher to recruit. I think this is just as a big of reason as our brand growing. –b on recruiting Texas.

Recruiting the state of Texas has become more difficult over the years. Even with the rise of Baylor and TCU, more highly-rated recruits are leaving the state. J.T. Barrett, Baker Mayfield (though he started his collegiate career in Texas) and Jalen Hurts are all prime examples. Establishing a good pipeline in the Dallas and Fort Worth area, as well as in Houston and Austin, is big for recruiting the state.

6. Mason Rudolph’s “IT” Factor

Read point one and that’s all I needed to read. Thank you Porter for coming out and saying this. I appreciate the honest and correct opinion that Mason just came out this year and never stepped up to be the IT factor this team needed. I mean sure he gobbled up a lot of yards and got some articles written about it. Cause ya know stats are so cool and all. –Guest on Mason Rudolph’s “it” factor.

Mason Rudolph had an incredible season and will be one of OSU’s all-time greats. He didn’t have the “it” factor at the end of games this season, but it doesn’t — and won’t — prevent him from leaving OSU as one its most illustrious talents.

7. Corndog’s Potential

Corndog is 6’6 and because he is not too thick has some pretty good speed for a QB. I’ve watched him take off and he is pretty quick.

Just needs to work on his accuracy from what I’ve seen. Don’t ever count the walk-on Quarterbacks out at OSU. Fields and Weeden were both really good walk-ons. –Les Miles on Corndog.

Now that Shea Patterson has officially announced he will be attending the University of Michigan next year, that leaves Taylor Cornelius and Spencer Sanders as 2018 favorites to start the season. With Sanders not on campus until this summer, Corndog could be the starter next year.

8. Big 12 Bowl Matchups

I think there is a legitimate chance the only two big 12 teams to win a game this bowl season could be the Oklahoma schools. I think Georgia will have a tough time with OU, and VT will have an even tougher time with us. Other than that, it looks gloomy. ISU could have the third best chance at a win vs Memphis if their defense plays like it can. TCU will have to play outstanding to beat Stanford, KSU will have some trouble with Rosen, USF showed they are forreal against UCF and Tech hasn’t looked good since the first quarter of the OU game, WVU is not the same without Grier and Utah has two blowout wins and two narrow losses to the top 2 teams in the pac 12 in the last 4 games, and Texas will be playing with their backups. –OSU Student on Big 12 Bowl Games.

The Big 12 got some intriguing bowl games. Of course, this could lead to a worse overall bowl record for the Big 12, but having to face better teams makes winning that much more impressive. I’m looking forward to the Iowa State-Memphis game and the TCU-Stanford game in particular. Of course, the OU- Georgia should be a good one and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing OSU play Virginia Tech. Let’s hope the rest of the Big 12 can pull out a few wins this bowl season.

9. Dillard And Dawson Out At OSU

OH CRUD!!!! It seems like there’s been an issue with those 2 all season. There was speculation even in these comments last week about Dillard. Man, that stinks. But, hopefully both young men will get their heads on straight and go elsewhere and be productive humans. Last thing we need is idiocy!! –Clint on Davon Dillard and Zack Dawson.

Davon Dillard and Zack Dawson were kicked off the OSU basketball team for not meeting OSU’s standards. I love that Boynton is putting his foot to the ground on this, but not having Dillard on the team will really hurt. Aside from his flashy dunks, Dillard might be the most talented player on the team. If not him, it would be Jeffrey Carroll, who has disappointed somewhat so far this season.

10. What’s Wrong With Jeffrey Carroll?

He’s just not getting enough Jawun Evans this year. That was a big part of his game last year, so Boynton needs to find a way to insert some Juwan back into his game. –Chris Baker on Jeff Carroll.

It’s clear that Carroll is missing Jawun Evans more than anybody else on the roster. While Evans is traveling around the U.S. with the Los Angeles Clippers, Carroll’s name has dropped off the face of every NBA scouting report. Hopefully Carroll can pick up his game before the season’s end and sneak back into the second round before next summer.
