It’s important to put into perspective the Tennessee-induced pay raise Mike Gundy recently received.

In early December, Gundy received a big pay raise. His salary will increase to $5 million in 2018. If that seems like a big number, it is. Only 10 head coaches in college football made that much this season, according to USA Today, and they are names you know.

Nick Saban. Dabo Swinney. Jim Harbaugh. Urban Meyer. Rich Rodriguez. Jimbo Fisher. David Shaw. Tom Herman. Gary Patterson. Kevin Sumlin.

Add Mike Gundy in 2018.

When you join that group of coaches who make $5 million plus, you also add expectations. This isn’t to say that a certain level of salary requires a certain number of wins, but it sure doesn’t hurt to win big. [NewsOK]

Carlson nailed it – expectations come with a price tag. Meyer, Swinney, Saban – championship or bust. RichRod (formerly) and Patterson may have been the closest comps for expectations – win 30 to 50 percent more than the average coach could at their school.

Shine(ing) Bright

While Tavarius Shine isn’t likely to be the second leading scorer on a team meriting a single-digit seed in the NCAA Tournament, it’s incredibly challenging to think about reaching 70 points a game without him.

Eleven months since the surgery, Shine is one of the Big 12’s best stories. The 6-foot-6 guard entered the summer with no role, no certainty of playing time — and no guarantee he would be the athlete and shooter he showed flashes of before missing most of last season. Now, as Oklahoma State (10-4, 0-2 Big 12) prepares to host Iowa State on Saturday, he is the Cowboys’ most consistent scoring threat.

Second on the team in points per game with 11.6, Shine has reached double figures in seven of his past eight games. In five games against ranked opponents, he’s averaging a team-high 14.6 points per game. [TulsaWorld]

As fans, we perceive sports-related injuries as a frustration – “it stinks that we don’t get to see that guy play” – but it’s hard to fathom the sense of dedication it takes for these guys to come back from such debilitating events to perform at such a high level.

Filling in as a go-to defender is huge.

CC: Gundy, Mike. If it’s not a special teams guy, here’s your fit.

I completely respect being second place to these guys.
