Even more astonishing about the Gundy contract is the fact that he’s one of college football’s most tenured.

With Stoops’ departure, Gundy has moved up to fifth on the list of coaches longevity in Division I-A football, and two of the coaches ahead of him have held the job less than a month longer than Gundy.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is No. 1. He was hired Dec. 2, 1998. Next is TCU’s Patterson (Dec. 8, 2000), then Utah’s Kyle Whittingham (Dec. 8, 2004), Ohio’s Solich (Dec. 16, 2004) and Gundy (Jan. 3, 2005). [NewsOK]

Coaches may have been in the game longer but few have found/built the continuity and stability Gundy has.

Leading Pair

James Washington and Jalen McCleskey were named one of college football’s dynamic duos – and some strategy was revealed in the process.

“We want to try to get the ball to Jalen first,” Oklahoma State receivers coach Kasey Dunn said. “And then as soon as the safeties start to drop down on top of him, that’s when we start to take advantage with James.

“When he sees one-on-one coverage, we want to get him the ball, because he’s so good on any 50-50 ball.” [ESPN]

It’s really fun to think about all the dynamic playmakers the Cowboys have on the outside and their unique skill sets. It gets even better when you think about them in conjunction and the synergy it will build.

State Question No. 1

Bill Haisten brings an interesting question around Bedlam.

For a full year, there was this question: When will the Gundy contract situation be resolved?

Now, there is this question: How much longer will Gundy be the higher paid of the Bedlam coaches?

Will the 33-year-old Riley, a rookie head coach, get more money than 49-year-old Gundy, a coaching veteran of 27 seasons? [TulsaWorld]

He goes on to guess that yes, Riley will likely make more. It’ll be a tough argument to convince that competency and not pride would be the reason OU would overpay a rookie head coach.
