Be Like Mike

In what was an absolutely fantastic, must-read profile on Cowboy coach Mike Boynton in the TulsaWorld, one of the best qualities of the new head man was highlighted.

That leader now patrols the OSU sideline, but occasionally, the dogged competitor emerges. At one point in Oklahoma State’s comeback from a 12-point deficit against Texas in January, Boynton squatted and slapped the floor, twice, as if he could transmit energy to his team via vibrations through Gallagher-Iba Arena’s white maple floorboards.

“I’m trying as hard as I can to get these guys to be me out there,” he said after the game. “I tell them all the time. I was a below-average player. I had no business playing in the SEC, except I had a big heart and I competed every day. And every night, I played against guys who were more talented, had more athletic ability.” [TulsaWorld]

Watching the jacket come off and the floor get slapped, you can palpably sense how much Boynton wills the team to perceive and feel the game he does. Regardless of where he’s at compared to his graybeard, pedigreed peers, his immense drive to win is turning tables and scoreboards.

Swing Play

As the single-digit lead felt razor thin, a play by Mitch Solomon felt like the tide-turner that pulled the lid off the game for the Pokes last night.

The Sooners had a definite opportunity to cut it to two as a Young steal gave OU a 3-on-1 advantage coming down the floor. But OSU’s one was senior forward Mitchell Solomon, their veteran MVP. Solomon disrupted Young’s oop to Brady Manek, creating a layup for fellow OSU senior Jeffrey Carroll on the other end. [NewsOK]

While the Pokes tread water while Kendall Smith and Jeffrey Carroll were on the bench, the foiled three-on-one that led to Carroll’s finish were immense in the flow of the game.

First Four

In a piece written before the win over OU, a case is made for the Pokes to play in the “First Four”.

OSU is 18-13 and coming off a rout of Kansas. The Cowboys are the first Big 12 team to sweep KU in the Bill Self Era. OSU was off the radar of bracketologists most of the season, but now the Cowboys are considered one of the few teams just outside the cut.

Beat OU, and the Cowboys might creep over the line and into the field. And creeping over the line puts a team firmly in the discussion for Dayton. [NewsOK]

A tourney cash grab to get even more games played in the first few days of the tourney, the Pokes could be bound for this 11 to 14-ish seed matchup.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Trend of dominant Kansas centers being out for post-season after playing OSU continues (See Embiid, Joel)….Ridiculousness of conference tourney locations on maps….“RedZone” coverage for March Madness sounds interesting….Liked this pre-conference tourney bracket big board from Yahoo – OSU as a 12 seems right….NCAA made $1B in 2017

If last night was a spectrum, OSU is playing like Gonzaga the weekend after St. Patrick’s Day or OU is playing like Texas A&M football in November. The truth is probably closer to the latter.

KC just feels like the perfect fit for a Big 12 basketball tournament.

Lunardi knows the NCAA Committee but Crean knows basketball teams.

Spot on.

I’m way out on this, give me the seeds ASAP.

Glad to see a Cowboy spotlighted but this feels like the NCAA trying to validate what they already give to the player.

Dude’s an athlete.
