PFB Comments of the Week (November 17)

Published

on

Watching the Cowboys play football in Ames is always fun, right? The Pokes managed to score the last 15 points of the game on Saturday to beat Iowa State 49-42. The Cardiac Cowboys planted their flag in Ames and move on to play the Kansas schools at home to close the regular season.

In a game of interest down south, Oklahoma boat-raced TCU 38-20 in a game that didn’t even seem that close. Rodney Anderson and Baker Mayfield carved up the TCU defense worse than a turkey on Thanksgiving and the Sooners all but locked up a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. TCU looked so bad against OU that a Horned Frogs loss to Texas Tech this weekend really isn’t that far-fetched. In fact, TCU only opened as a 7-point favorite over the Red Raiders.

For the majority of OSU fans who would like to see the Pokes get another shot at OU in the Big 12 Championship game on December 2, you should be a huge Texas Tech fan this weekend. If TCU loses to Texas Tech, the Pokes are back in the Big 12 Championship game, provide they win out. With all that said, lets take a look at the top comments of the week.

1. J.D. King’s Lack Of Carries

Doesn’t feel like King has had 94 carries. Surprised to not see him more in Ames. It hurts to get a helmet to your bare arm in the cold and Justice Hill would be the first to tell you that. King proved he’s good to go at Texas so I want to see him relieve Hill more. Especially down the stretch. Hill is too good to be wearing a boot all offseason. –Brian Cassens on JD King.

I agree, King is only at 94 because Justice went down in the West Virginia game. There’s no reason King shouldn’t be getting a handful of carries every other drive.

2. Offensive Potential For Next Season

How many many of our offensive linemen return next year? Washington leaving won’t hurt them at all, they can literally plug and chug in his absence. They’re deeper than the marina trench at receiver. Mason leaving is a cause for concern, but if the line is still in tact and improved next season, whoever is QB (probably/hopefully Sanders) should have a relatively easy transition. Good O-line, studs filling up the backfield, stars all over the place at receiver. Sanders could bring an even more difficult dimension to our offense if he can handle the college transition, because he’s such an elusive runner. Our offense would still be a tough one to handle. –OSU Student on the OSU offense next year.

Although they won’t be as good as this year, next season’s group featuring Tyron Johnson, McCleskey, Stoner, Wallace and C.J. Moore will be pretty good. If Spencer Sanders is what I think he is, the OSU passing game will be just fine. As long as the passing game is fine, the running game with Justice Hill and J.D. King will be excellent. The offensive line is the biggest question mark. None of it works without a good offensive line.

3. OSU-KSU Spread

Remember all those games where we comfortably beat K-State? Oh that’s right, we haven’t beaten them by more than 10 points since 1988. I’ll play the odds and take KSU and 17.5 points. –adam on the OSU-KSU spread.

Well this is evidence if I’ve ever seen it. This team is better than a lot of past OSU teams, but Kansas State isn’t typically a team that gets blown out. Expect the Wildcats to take the “Mississippi State vs Alabama” approach and try to play keep away from the Pokes.

4. OSU’s CFP Chances

This is dreamland above! If Clemson/Bama win out & OSU gets into title game vs OU & wins, 12-1 Miami & 11-2 Ohio State get in before OSU. Plus OU would be only quality win, so hate to be Debbie Downer but OSU CFP is pretty much dead. –Bryce on OSU’s CFP chances.

Simply put, this season has been chaotic. We as sports fans probably say that every year, but there are more one- and two-loss contenders this year than any other before it. As far as OSU’s chances go, it’s probably not worth investing a lot time worrying about it. If it happens that’s great, but at this point a spot in the Big 12 Championship game and a New Year’s 6 bowl would be great.

5. Reforming The Power 5

2! 4 16 team conferences. Each conference has two 8 team divisions. If you aren’t good enough to get into the top 64 FBS-I division then you fight for the FBS-II.

Making the group of 5 schools compete in the same division of schools that literally have tens of millions more dollars than them is ridiculous. That would be like taking the salary cap of the Dallas Cowboys and letting them play against the CFL. –Tbeezy on reforming the conferences.

I’d like to see this happen if the Big 12 collapses. Ideally, two teams from a conference that has more than 12 teams would transfer to the Big 12. It’d be interesting to see a 10-game regular season and six-round playoff, like Texas High School Football does it, but that will likely never happen.

6. Marcell Ateman…Is A Dude

The look on the Iowa State fans around me when Ateman caught that ball was worth the drive. That feeling was topped when Green came down with the INT! It’s a great day to be a Cowboy!! –Son of a Cowboy on Marcell Ateman’s game winning touchdown.

The Pokes have a great group of seniors and Marcell Ateman is right up there with Mason Rudolph and James Washington among the group of Cowboys we’ll all miss watching suit up on Saturdays. Watching Marcell moss opposing defensive backs all season has been a pleasure, and I’m sure we all look forward to watching him do it on Sundays.

7. Academics

This won’t make any news listings but this is awesome …. that’s what gundy means about culture, grooming young men too go out into the world and succeed….. life is much more than football and a lot of people forget that. –David Issac Mosley on academics at OSU football.

Academics has become one of the top priorities for Mike Gundy’s staff, and over the last several years this has become evident. Shout out to the guys in the classroom, as a college student, I know how special this is for this team.

8. TCU…Will Not Lose To Baylor

We are all thinking about the possibility of Tech beating TCU, but I would also not rule out the possibility of Baylor beating TCU in the “Revivalry” even though it is played in Ft. Worth this year. –Alum in AZ on possibility of TCU losing another game.

If TCU is to beat TTU, there’s no possibility that TCU losses to Baylor. With a Big 12 Championship berth on the line and some semblance of momentum, they’ll get up for the rivalry game.

9. Everyone Welcome New PFB Writer Seth Duckworth!

Story idea: something more in-depth on some of OSU’s past national champions, especially some of our wrestlers who won more than one national championship. Obviously, our coach would be one, but we actually have quite a few that fit this description. –Forever 14 on Wrestling Coverage.

This seems like a solid idea to me. Also, everyone be sure to welcome our new wrestling specialist Seth Duckworth to the team! (and go follow him @sethad) The former Oklahoma State finalist in wrestling will be a great addition to the PFB family.

10. Gundy Loves The Miltary

LOVE that he walks onto the field to meet veterans at the game. 55,000 people in the stadium worrying how we’re going to finish off an opponent and the one who you’d think has the most pressure on him takes the time to go say hello and thank them for their service. –Winning Comment on Gundy greeting veterans during the game.

I’ve noticed this going back to last season. Gundy embodies what Oklahoma State stands for better than anyone else on campus. He’s the real deal and someone OSU fans can be proud to have captain their program.
