Money Where the ____ Is
Bill Haisten asks a hard question: is it time to pay Mike Boynton?
Has Boynton done enough to get a huge raise? Not yet, but he’s had a pretty good first season.
OSU was 8-10 during the Big 12 regular-season schedule. Six of those wins were against teams that did make the NCAA Tournament bracket. The Cowboys twice defeated Kansas, twice defeated Oklahoma, prevailed at West Virginia and beat Texas Tech.
Has Boynton done enough to validate Holder’s hire? Absolutely, yes.
Oklahoma State athletic department insiders are unanimous with praise for the way Boynton handled tough situations like the FBI investigation that led to the arrest and firing of assistant coach Lamont Evans. Boynton himself has not been implicated in anything related to the investigation. [TulsaWorld]
Half of the battle is on the court and half is on the recruiting trail. Haisten concludes with the below point that puts a nice bow on it.
Here’s what should happen: Boynton deserves more than the $100,000 raise that he already is contractually scheduled to get. A fair increase today would be to $1.5 million.
If recruiting goes well and if the 2018-19 Cowboys are more competitive than the 2017-18 Cowboys, and if there is an NCAA Tournament appearance, then a year from now there would be every justification for taking Boynton to or beyond the Ford level of money — to at least $2.4 million. [TulsaWorld]
A modest raise for rallying in tough circumstances is reasonable – everyone agrees he’s worth at minimum half of his peers’ salary. Recruit some ballplayers and that salary will come up even quicker.
Money Where Your Heart Is
Mike Gundy has garnered publicity for the Pokes in numerous cost-efficient ways – his most recent newsworthy comments have different intentions.
“(Gundy) is a passionate guy and he was 100 percent sincere (during the board meeting),” (Stillwater school board president Camille) DeYong said. “So, the question is, how do we act and how do we act quickly? As you well know, it’s not like (Stillwater Public Schools officials) have a lot of extra money to go out and hire (additional security personnel).
“If Mike and Kristen are willing to help us with that, then heck yeah, we’re going to take advantage of that. We’ll be looking for the best way to protect our kids.” [TulsaWorld]
It’s always fantastic when celebrities use their platform for good and even better when they use their money for the cause.
OSU and NCAA Notes
Larry Williams caught in limbo….Winners and losers from the first round of the tourney….Losing from every NCAA Tourney seed is hard but these teams are trying….Three OSU golfers picked to compete in Palmer Cup….A great part of Cinderella teams advancing is their stories being highlighted: (Nevada – conquerors of Texas and UMBC – the ultimate 16 seed)….I’m super intrigued with the Cowboys’ secondary and how it looks next year
Props to the Cowgirls for winning the 8-9 game

Impressive move from the K-State managers here: having the foresight to bring the home whites for when UMBC pulled the upset.
Yes, the Cats packed the white uniforms.

Rudolph-t0-Pitt would be nice too – a sit and wait with a stable franchise.
